Christian Funeral Rituals And Their Importance
For devout Christians, a funeral service marks the beginning of the journey of the soul to the life after death. It is because of this precise reason that such services are very uplifting, as they strongly assert the belief that the deceased has found an eternal abode in the House of God.
Christians consider death as an exit from the world of grief and an entry into the world of permanent bliss. It provides some comfort to the bereaved family that the deceased is with the Lord Himself and is enjoying heavenly bliss. This immensely helps in alleviating the pain that death of a loved one causes. The Christian funeral service is performed by the Christians keeping these beliefs in mind.
Usually, a Christian funeral service is organized by the pastor. The funeral service usually is conducted at the church which the deceased visited regularly. Though the service does not have a casket usually, but when it is being held inside a funeral home, casket is usually present. Viewing of the corpse is not something that you will find in a typical Christian funeral ceremony.
The funeral ceremony is almost like a memorial, in which the proceedings begin with singing of hymns, a soloist, and religious readings from the Holy Scriptures. This is then followed by a short elocution from the pastor and subsequently a mass prayer by all those who have assembled there.
Next the family members and relatives share their sorrows with the group, and the attendees express their feelings and respect for the dead person and share their ruminations on how the deceased touched their lives and left an everlasting void. These days, people also put up a slide show containing snapshots from the life of the deceased or play a video recording taken from his or her lifetime.
The service finally ends with a short fellowship reception at the church, where food is served. A graveside service is generally not included, though some Christian communities opt for that as well.
